home remedies for head lice

If left unnoticed, lice can rapidly become a nuisance. Your kid will have a hard time relaxing and doing the daily task in peace at home or at school with all the continual itching and irritation. Spending a lot of time outdoors and with other children affected by the head lice can cause your child to contract this itchy problem. If you see nits on the scalp of your child, this is the ultimate indication. Here’s all about natural home remedies for head lice to get rid of them.

What Are Head Lice?

Head lice are insects living in human hair. They can’t fly or jump, but they can run at 9 inches per minute. And are generally passed on to another individual through immediate head-to-head contact. They can be discovered primarily at the back of the head or behind the ears while appearing on the eyelids or eyebrows at times.

Symptoms of Head Lice

Your child’s head and hair may have been infested with lice if it has the following symptoms:

  • Itching all the time
  • Irritability or sleeping difficulties
  • Swollen glands or lymph nodes
  • tickling feeling on the head
  • Sores caused by scratching

Effective Home Remedies For Head Lice:

The most efficient and safe home remedies are given below to get rid of lice and hair nits.

1.Tea Tree Oil:

Being a natural louse repellent, tea tree oil is a great way to avoid infections of the hair lice. Whenever your child’s school has a head lice outbreak, use this remedy. Tea tree oil has insecticidal and ovicidal impacts, meaning it kills both the lice and the eggs. In a 2012 experiment using this vital oil, a 100% mortality rate of lice was noted.

Before going to bed, apply a few drops of tea tree oil to the affected scalp and hair. Place a towel on the pillow and sleep as usual. Comb carefully the hair in the morning to remove all the dead lice and nits.

2. Listerine:

Listerine includes eucalyptus and thymol that kill the lice.

Put your hair and scalp in Listerine and cover with a shower cap. Be cautious not to have Listerine in your ears or on your face. Leave the two-hour shower cap on. Rinse with shampoo on a regular basis. Follow this to remove any remaining lice and nits with a thorough combing session.

3. Olive Oil:

Olive oil suffocates the adult lice and helps to slide the nits off the hair readily when combined with a nit removal comb.

Thoroughly apply the oil all over the scalp and hair. Cover and leave it overnight with a shower cap. Wash the remaining lice and eggs with lukewarm water and comb.

4. Neem Oil:

Also renowned for killing head lice is Neem oil. It blocks both the nits and the adult lice’s air passages, ensuring an increased mortality rate.

Add a few drops of neem oil to your normal shampoo and use it to rinse your scalp and hair. The rinsing should be accompanied by the proper combing of parts of the hair using a nit comb.

5. Vegetable Oil

You must not have some vegetable oil in the kitchen, even if you don’t get any essential or carrier oil around the home. Oil works in the same way as other oils. It suffocates the head lice.

Apply to the hair and scalp vegetable oil, cover with a shower cap and leave it overnight. Next morning, rinse with shampoo.

6. Eucalyptus Oil:

Eucalyptus oil is a powerful fumigant that efficiently kills the head lice. Even lice that are resistant to chemical medicines have been proven to work against it.

Mix with the carrier oil the essential oil and apply to the scalp and hair. Cover and leave it overnight with a shower cap. Comb hair to remove dead lice in the morning and then rinse hair as usual.

7. Baking Soda:

Baking soda on the scalp helps to ease itchiness. It kills head lice by restricting their respiratory system when used in combination with the conditioner.

Mix the baking soda and conditioner and over the scalp and hair apply this combination.
Now, after each combing session, comb through the hair section by section and put the comb on a paper towel. You will notice the removal of adult lice, baby lice, and nits as well.
Rinse with shampoo after combing through all the hair.

8. Petroleum Jelly:

Petroleum jelly also makes the lice uninhabitable and suffocates it to death. This method has been shown to cause maximum lice and egg mortality compared to the other home remedies.

Rub the affected scalp with generous quantities of petroleum jelly and keep it covered until the next morning. To bring the jelly together with the lice, apply some baby oil on the nit comb and run it through the hair. Wash the hair with shampoo well to totally remove the jelly.

Try these easy but efficient home remedies for head lice, and you’ll see the hair and scalp of your child totally free from annoying lice infestations. Make sure that the remedies are followed for best outcomes two to three times a week. Some of these, however, can also be performed every day.
