Yes, Homeschooling is legal in India. As the Minister of Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal formally acknowledged and approved homeschooling as a legal instructional choice throughout India in September 2010 under the “Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009.” The Act stipulates eight years of formal education for all kids between the ages of 6 and 14.

 

Advantages of Homeschooling in India:

• In today’s situation where most parents work and live in a nuclear family. It becomes hard to offer more time to educate children. The greatest issue facing working parents is Where to leave the children after school? As most schools finish after 2:00 pm while parents reach home 7 or 8 in the evening. Disadvantages of Homeschooling in India:

• The biggest drawback to homeschooling is the lack of socialization of the child. As he gets his home education that restricts his social circle and interacts with other kids. In school children celebrate all the festivals and occasions together. Share their lunch boxes, exchange their ideas and learn about the fresh things from the behavior of senior students. That assist them to understand the social and moral values in detail. But in homeschool children get an education in their house that can render them isolated, passive or ill-equipped to manage situations where communication is necessary.
• Not all parents are trained teachers. So teaching their children in a way as the teachers do in school becomes hard for them. They need to prepare lessons, plan activities, organize and keep the kids on tasks like teachers that need a lot of time and skill. Parents need to keep the equilibrium between their own time and time for educating their kid, which is really very hard. So finding time for yourself becomes hard. Usually, one parent has to sacrifice his / her career in order to give their children a better education at home.
• It’s not feasible for parents to teach their children all the subjects. So they have to hire the tutors that can get a little bit costly.
• Homeschooling can be costly as parents have to purchase books, equipment, computer software, and other resources to teach the lessons. They have to plan the trips, social activities like schools do to better guide the children as they can’t learn all from books. Besides routine demands such as books, CDs, painting kits, additional courses that are very costly these days also have to be paid for.
• You have to set up a separate room for your children where they can study without disturbance. And it’s hard to arrange the separate room for children in today’s scenario.
